Frequently Asked Questions
About Your Appointment
What happens during a lice treatment appointment?
Jamie will perform a thorough head screening, then apply our all-natural, pesticide-free treatment products. Using professional combing techniques refined over 18 years, all lice and nits (eggs) are removed during a single visit. Most treatments take 1–2 hours depending on hair length and severity of infestation. You’ll leave lice-free — guaranteed.
How long does a treatment take?
Most individual treatments take 1–2 hours. Family appointments with multiple people may take longer. Jamie will give you a time estimate when you call to book, based on the number of people and hair types involved.
Do I need to bring anything to my appointment?
Come with clean, dry hair — no conditioner, styling products, or hair gel. Bring a change of shirt if you’d like. We have toys and entertainment for kids, but feel free to bring tablets or books. Plan to be here 1–2 hours. That’s it — we handle everything else.
Do you treat the whole family at once?
Yes — and we strongly recommend it. Lice spread easily within households, and treating everyone at once prevents re-infestation. We offer family rates for multiple-member appointments. Just let Jamie know how many people need to be seen when you call, so she can schedule enough time.
What is your guarantee?
If you follow our aftercare instructions and are not 100% lice-free after your visit, we will re-treat at no additional charge. We stand behind our work completely.
Do you do follow-up checks?
Yes. Jamie is available by phone or text for any questions after your appointment. Follow-up screening visits can also be scheduled if you’d like extra peace of mind — for example, before sending a child back to school or camp.
Pricing & Payment
How much does lice removal cost?
Pricing depends on the number of family members being treated and the severity of infestation. Family rates are available for multiple people treated in the same visit. Call or text (847) 715-9700 for a quick, no-pressure estimate. Contact us for pricing →
Do you accept insurance, HSA, or FSA?
We do not bill insurance directly. However, we provide itemized receipts that many families successfully submit for HSA (Health Savings Account) or FSA (Flexible Spending Account) reimbursement. We recommend checking with your plan administrator in advance — lice treatment is considered a qualified medical expense under many plans.
What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept cash, credit cards, debit cards, Venmo, and Zelle.
Can I book online?
Currently, the fastest way to book is to call or text Jamie directly at (847) 715-9700. She typically responds within minutes and can often accommodate same-day appointments. Online booking is coming soon.

What are your hours?
We see clients by appointment. Jamie is well-known for her flexibility — same-day, evening, and weekend appointments are often available. Call or text (847) 715-9700 anytime to check availability and schedule.
My child needs to go back to school or camp tomorrow. Can you help?
Yes — this is exactly the situation we’re built for. Call or text Jamie at (847) 715-9700 and we’ll do everything we can to fit you in that same day or evening. Most children return to school or camp the very next day after treatment with a clean bill of health.
Is the space private and discreet?
Absolutely. Privacy is a core part of what we do. Our treatment space is private, clean, and comfortable — you won’t be in a public salon or waiting room with other clients. Many families appreciate the discretion of visiting Happy Hair rather than a walk-in lice clinic.
About Lice
How do I know if my child has lice?
Look for persistent itching — especially behind the ears and at the back of the neck. You may also notice tiny white or tan specks attached to the hair shaft close to the scalp (these are nits, or lice eggs) or small sesame-seed-sized insects moving through the hair. If you’re not sure, we offer professional screening to confirm. Note: many lice infestations are asymptomatic — itching doesn’t always occur, especially in early cases.
Why don’t over-the-counter products like Nix or Rid work?
Many lice strains have developed genetic resistance to permethrin, the active pesticide ingredient in most drugstore treatments — these are commonly called “super lice.” Research suggests that more than 95% of head lice in the United States now carry this resistance gene. Our professional method uses natural enzymes and thorough manual removal to eliminate even resistant lice without toxic chemicals.
What are “super lice”?
Super lice are head lice that have evolved a genetic resistance to the most common over-the-counter treatments. They look and behave exactly like regular lice — the only difference is that pesticide-based shampoos and sprays don’t kill them. Professional manual removal, which is what we do at Happy Hair, is the most reliable treatment regardless of whether lice are resistant.
Can adults get lice?
Yes. While head lice are most common in school-aged children, adults catch them regularly — most often from their own kids. We treat adults all the time. There’s nothing to be embarrassed about; lice are not a hygiene issue and can affect anyone.
Do I need to wash all my bedding and clean my whole house?
Basic precautions are smart: wash bedding and recently worn clothing in hot water (at least 130°F), and vacuum upholstered furniture. But don’t panic about deep-cleaning your entire home. Head lice cannot survive more than 24–48 hours off the human scalp — they do not live in carpets, car seats, or furniture for long. Focus your energy on treating the people in your household. That’s where it matters.
Can lice survive on pets?
No. Head lice are human-specific parasites. They cannot live on dogs, cats, or other household animals, and pets cannot spread or carry human lice. Your pets are not part of the problem.
Special Situations
We’re traveling and just discovered lice — do you take emergency cases?
Yes. Call or text Jamie at (847) 715-9700, even in the evening. We make every effort to accommodate urgent situations, including pre-travel and pre-camp emergencies. Don’t hesitate to reach out — that’s what we’re here for.
My child has very long or thick hair — does that change anything?
Longer or thicker hair may require additional treatment time, but the process is the same and the results are just as complete. Jamie has extensive experience treating all hair types and lengths. Just let her know when you book so she can schedule enough time for your appointment.
My pediatrician recommended you. Do I need a referral?
No referral is needed — just call or text (847) 715-9700 to book directly. We’re proud that many North Shore pediatricians trust and recommend Happy Hair. Your doctor’s endorsement is welcome, but never required.
